Combined with fresh mountain air, you’ve got a winning combination for enjoying the evenings in Blue Ridge. We have provided some inspiration for you whether you are traveling solo or with the family. Time to head out to your back deck, fire pit or back yard!
View a Local Phenomenon: Fireflies
On a typical summer evening in Blue Ridge, as the sun sets below the horizon, a magical transformation occurs right in our backyards. Fireflies, also known as lightning bugs, start to twinkle as they begin their nightly dance. This is a quintessential part of summer in the North Georgia mountains and invites us to pause and appreciate the simpler joys of life. Read more here about these special insects and how you can help protect them.

Embrace a Clear Night Sky Away from City Lights: Star Gazing
On a clear night, take a blanket outside, lie back and gaze at the stars. Move away from any source of artificial light (streetlights, landscape lighting, bright windows) and even consider driving a short distance to avoid light pollution. Think about areas near fields and other open spaces where you have a larger expanse of sky. Get ready for a spectacular view and if you happen to have just an ordinary pair of binoculars you can use them for a closer look!
Check the calendar for any full moons, new moons (dark skies are great for sky watching!), meteor showers, and eclipses. We have compiled a list of meteor showers here.
By using the Night Sky Planner you can learn what planets and stars will be visible in a specific zip code. Do you see constellations or planets? Consider using an app such as SkyView to help identify or locate the stars, constellations and planets that you see above you.

Spend time technology free time around a campfire: Make s’mores or tell stories
About all you need for a successful backyard campfire is a fire pit, some wood to burn and friends or family. You get points for bringing out the s’mores and telling a story or singing a song around the campfire. The simplicity of sitting around a campfire creates the perfect atmosphere for bonding and relaxation. Consider leaving your technology back inside and embrace good old-fashioned fun.
Get creative with your s’mores and have everyone bring an ingredient outside the ordinary marshmallow, chocolate, and graham crackers. You could have peanut butter cups, white chocolate, or fudge stripe cookies to mix it up!
Remember, safety is key when enjoying a campfire. Check our local advisories first to ensure there are no fire bans due to dry weather. Register for timely weather and community alerts on your cell phone or via email or call our visitor center at (706) 632-5680.
Enjoy the Sounds of Nature: Stop & Listen
Head outside and find a comfortable place to sit. Maybe you have the perfect spot on your back porch, along a creek side, or simply in a grassy area out back. Once settled, take a moment to pause and appreciate the sensory experience of nature. Listen for owls, crickets, frogs, or the wind in the trees. What else do you hear? Embrace the moment of stillness, allowing yourself a deeper connection to your outdoor environment.
