Horseback Riding in Blue Ridge
If you want to cover more terrain, see unique and special landscapes and experience something new…a horseback riding adventure is the answer!
Blue Ridge is majestic, and we encourage you to hike the trails regularly. However, if you want to cover more terrain, see unique and special landscapes and experience something new…a horseback riding adventure is the answer.
While each of the locations in the area offer multiple ways to enjoy the horses, here are our favorite unique Blue Ridge horseback riding experiences to incorporate into your next visit.
Seasoned Rider Trip
North Georgia Equestrian Tours is the place for a sensational half-day or full-day trail trip into the Cohutta Wildlife Management Area if you have previous riding experience. You’re expected to mount, dismount and control your horses on your own; if you can’t do that confidently, you might opt for a personal lesson instead.
You’ll ride to Jack’s River Fields campground for a picnic and then circle back to the starting point. The ride includes river crossings, creek crossings and more…all over about 13 miles of mountains and valleys.
A Matchless Date (Day or Evening)
If you’re looking to impress, Cowgirl Up Stables offers options–no riding experience required. Take the two-hour Picnic Ride which offers a layover at so you can enjoy an outdoor lunch catered by one of our local restaurants. For a small per-person upcharge, you can turn this into a private tour. Prefer a later excursion? Try the one-hour private Sunset Ride through the Georgia mountains.
If this date is The One then consider the Proposal/Romantic Ride with options like champagne at the picnic spot, a photographer or intimate lights strung through the trees on your tour.
When You Need an Overnight
If you want to incorporate horseback riding into an overnight getaway, then head to Brasstown Valley Resort. Their Escape Package features your accommodations, breakfast for two and a resort adventure.
If you elect The Stables as your adventure, it includes a two-hour guided trail ride over their five miles of trails of fields, forests and streams. Brasstown can accommodate beginner and advanced riders, alike.
Soothe and Saddle for Newbies
This package from Blue Ridge Mountain Trail Rides works for anyone, but can be especially appreciated by those new to horseback riding. You’ll spend an hour in the saddle meandering the streams and creeks within the forest with panoramic scenic mountain views.
An All-out Adventure
If you’d prefer a whitewater adventure when your trail ride is over, then Blanche Manor should be your choice. Start with a 75-minute ride with a Blanch Manor guide through the shady forest of Copperhill.
Once you’re done, make your way to Ocoee Adventure Center for a Middle Ocoee rafting trip. This three-hour excursion takes you on a ride of America’s most famous section of class III-IV whitewater. (Note: This dual adventure is only available on weekdays.)
A Full Cowboy Experience
Appalachian Trail Rides offers couples and families a true cowboy experience with their Dinner Ride. You’ll take the horses on the trail for an hour before dismounting at the gazebo near the ponds on property.
Fish at the pond, listen to live music and take in the fresh mountain air as you gather around the campfire. Once the dinner bell rings, nosh on ribs, pulled pork or smoked turkey, with sides and dessert. Vegetarian and kiddo options available.
Planning Tips
- Be sure to wear long pants, even when riding in summer. This prevents chaffing and scratches.
- Have cowboy boots in the back of your closet? Bring them. Shoes with heels will help you keep your foot in the stirrup.
- Leave coins, keys and other small trinkets in the car and not your pockets, as you don’t want to lose them on the trail.
- It is customary to tip your trail guide. Standard rates are 18-20%.
