In the northernmost reaches of Georgia’s Blue Ridge, travelers can straddle the state line, putting a foot in each state. McCaysville, Georgia, and Copperhill, Tennessee, share a border that winds and curves around buildings and down streets. McCaysville was founded in 1904 and was the site of mining operations.

This area, called the Copper Basin, was a part of the route of the Marietta and North Georgia Railroad but now is a stop on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. It runs seasonally from April to December, cutting through the stunning North Georgia scenery.

The Blue Line

No trip to McCaysville is complete without a photo at the blue line painted through town. Far from a straight line, it winds from the IGA grocery store, across the street, and towards the river. The wooden sign marking the state line is a favorite spot for photos.

The Toccoa River

A river runs through it! The Toccoa River, known as the Ocoee River in Tennessee, serves as a border in some places between McCaysville and Copperhill. A ferry originally operated between the two towns but the Old Steel Bridge was built in 1911 to make it even easier. It is still open to cars and pedestrians, along with the new bridge next to the visitor’s center.

If you’re looking for a bit more adventure, you can see the river by whitewater rafting or tubing. Outfitters like Toccoa River Tubing Company and Rolling Thunder River Company can arrange your afternoon on the water. They operate on weekends throughout the year except for Sunday, when they are open every day, depending on weather conditions and water flow.

Copper Grill

While the address is Copperhill, the state line cuts through part of the Copper Grill. After a long day of exploring, settle into this restaurant for a hearty burger topped with bacon and cheese, a hot dog or a pulled pork sandwich.

Copperhill Brewery

While it’s not the only brewery in Copperhill, Copperhill Brewery is the only one that touches the “blue line.” Hang out for the afternoon in the taproom, sampling one of their lagers, IPAs and seltzers. You can even take a growler to-go.

Rum Cake Lady

After finding success in Blue Ridge, the Cuban bakery and cafe opened a second location in McCaysville. It’s located in the old Blue and White Pure gas station on the corner of Highway 5 and Toccoa Avenue. Here you can grab a cafecito, empanadas or an authentic Cuban sandwich with tostones.

Yellowbird Coffee Shop

Looking for a caffeine boost? Yellowbird Coffee Shop is in an old bank building near the Old Steel Bridge, complete with the drive-through that you can also walk up to. The state line cuts into the corner of the building. Grab an Americano and sip on the patio where the ATM used to sit. They also have sandwiches and snacks.
