The Best Stops on Your Day Trip to McCaysville
Check out these hidden treasures as you explore around McCaysville GA.
Maybe you’re taking an excursion on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway and you need some ideas for the layover in McCaysville. Perhaps you’ve experienced the layover and realized this town is worthy of a day trip in its own right. Regardless of how you find yourself exploring this Fannin County gem, these are the stops you’ll want to make on your next trip to the border.
Shopping and Exploring
Copperhill Rock & Mineral Co.
If the “rock” in rock-and-roll feeds your soul, then head over to Copperhill Rock & Minerals in the same Riverwalk shopping area. This is the area's largest geologist-owned rock shop, with a huge assortment of specimens. These collections come from across the globe, and locally.
Seasoned collectors will appreciate the wealth of knowledge that the owner brings to the table, but do not be intimidated: questions from beginners are appreciated, too.. There is also a great selection of items for kids, who are always welcome in the store.
Christmas Is Here!
No, that’s not a typo. Celebrate Christmas everyday at this unique shop in RiverWalk. You’ll find Santas by Jim Shore, Karen Didion and others; hand-painted Wilhelm Schweizer Pewter pieces; Ne' Qwa painted glass art and ornaments, and so much more.
You’ll also find a great selection of Handhewn bowls and wood art crafted by the store owners. With such attention to detail, it’s no surprise that two White House Administrations displayed their Handhewn pieces, which were moved into the Smithsonian Institute after the Presidents left office. Stop in to pick up your own piece of wood history or Christmas memorabilia.
Horseshoe Bend Park
One of the most fun and scenic river parks in the area is Horseshoe Bend Park in McCaysville. It's right on the Toccoa River and a great place to picnic, dip your toes in the water, and also a great place to trout fish. This is also the home of Pickin' in the Park, May through September. Musicians gather and perform throughout the park, it is free to the public. Other amenities at Horseshoe Bend include playgrounds, a volleyball net, and picnic tables. Shelters are available to rent by calling 706-946-1130 or 706-632-7696.
Time to Eat
Twisted Tomato
From the same folks who bring you amazing street tacos at Burra Burra, Twisted Tomato is where to go if pizza pie is what you’re after. And oh, those meatballs!
The Waterfront Bar
Just over the river is the area's newest restaurant, complete with a waterfront deck and great food. It’s also the only tavern on the TN side of the river to boast a full liquor license.
Burra Burra On The River
If you’re looking for waterfront dining on the GA side of the river, Burra Burra is all the rage. You’ll find burgers, steak and chicken, salads and more. We’re partial to the street tacos and the shepherd's pie. Looking for an appy? The mozzarella sticks or a side of hushpuppies can’t be beat.
Tooney’s Music Venue
Located in RiverWalk, this is the ideal place to listen to some local music, dine of great food, and soak up the vibe of the river. Beer and wine are served here, but if you want to nosh then you’re encouraged to make a “to go” order from Burra Burra or Twisted Tomato and bring it with you.
Copperhill Brewery or Buck Bald Brewing
If you’re looking for the best in local craft beer, one (or both!) of these two breweries are your answer. We love the darts, trivia and live entertainment at Copperhill…and the outdoor seating at Buck Bald. Since they are essentially kiddy-corner across the street from each other, you don’t have to pick just one.
Also, for either location, you are welcome to order food from the nearby restaurants and eat it at the brewery. We recommend a pick up from El Rio, Rum Cake Lady, Habaneros or the Copper Grill.
